Knowing your DPF warning lights can mean the difference between routine maintenance and an expensive engine repair. Ignoring these alerts can lead to costly damage, including turbo failure, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) replacement, and a clogged DPF requiring full replacement.

This article, is based on an article by Todd Dills for Overdrive. Daniel Mustafa, Assistant Manager of Technical Development at TravelCenters of America, breaks down what each DPF-related warning light means, and when to take action.

Why DPF Warning Lights Matter

DPF filters collect soot and ash, which must be burned off through regeneration or cleaned periodically. Ignoring cleaning intervals can result in:

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Loss of engine power (derating)

  • Costly replacements of the DPF and DOC

DPF Warning Light Breakdown

DPF Hot Exhaust Warning Light

1. DPF Hot Exhaust Warning Light

Indicates that passive regeneration is occurring. This happens when the engine is running under heavy load, such as on the highway with a full load. The high exhaust temperatures help burn off soot buildup before it clogs the DPF.

DPF Regen Warning Light

2. DPF Regen Warning Light

This means the system needs a regeneration cycle. If ignored, the light will begin to blink, signaling urgency. At this point, the engine may start derating, reducing power output to prevent further damage.

Yellow Check Engine Light

3. Yellow Check Engine Light

This light appears when excess soot buildup has started affecting performance. The first stage is a 20% reduction in horsepower, but if ignored, it can escalate to a 40% derate, making driving nearly impossible. At this point, a manual regen is no longer an option, and professional service is required.

Red Stop Engine Warning Light

4. Red Stop Engine Warning Light

The worst-case scenario—engine damage is imminent. If this light appears, it’s likely that the DPF and DOC are severely clogged, and immediate service is required to avoid catastrophic failure.

The Importance of Sticking to DPF Cleaning Intervals

Daniel Mustafa’s advice is simple:"Get the cleaning done before it breaks, and you’ll never have an issue."

Regular DPF cleaning intervals help:

✔ Avoid DPF clogging and costly repairs

✔ Improve fuel efficiency and engine performance

✔ Prevent downtime due to derating and engine shutdown
